Horton breaks while leading at Rome Speedway; Third-place finish at Dixie
Lifting the lid on his Memorial Day weekend, Austin Horton made the short trip to Dixie Speedway (Woodstock, Ga.) on Saturday afternoon to pilot his Franklin Enterprises No. 16 Late Model for the Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals event. Following the fastest time in his qualifying group during time trials, Horton faded one spot in the 40-lap feature to register a third-place finish. He trailed Randy Weaver and Brandon Overton to the checkers with Dale McDowell and Zack Mitchell rounding out the Top-5. (Mike Blevins photo)
The following night at Rome Speedway (Rome, Ga.) Austin topped the 23-car field in time trials, which positioned him second on the starting grid for the $4,053-to-win A-Main. Overtaking the top spot on the 10th lap after polesitter Dale McDowell suffered a flat right-rear tire, Horton shot out to a commanding lead but suffered a broken radiator with 10-to-go that ended his run immediately.
